12.38. Kehendak (1)

Di Sāvatthī. “Para bhikkhu, apa yang dikehendaki seseorang, dan apa yang direncanakan seseorang, dan kecenderungan pada apa pun yang dimiliki seseorang: ini menjadi dasar bagi pemeliharaan kesadaran. Ketika ada dasar maka ada penyokong bagi terbentuknya kesadaran. Ketika kesadaran terbentuk dan telah berkembang, maka ada produksi penjelmaan kembali di masa depan. Jika ada produksi penjelmaan kembali di masa depan, maka kelahiran, penuaan-dan-kematian, kesedihan, ratapan, kesakitan, ketidak-senangan, dan keputus-asaan di masa depan juga muncul. Demikianlah asal-mula keseluruhan kumpulan penderitaan ini.

“Jika, para bhikkhu, seseorang tidak menghendaki, dan tidak merencanakan, tetapi masih memiliki kecenderungan pada sesuatu, maka ini menjadi dasar bagi pemeliharaan kesadaran. Jika ada dasar maka ada penyokong bagi terbentuknya kesadaran … Demikianlah asal-mula keseluruhan kumpulan penderitaan ini.

“Tetapi, para bhikkhu, jika seseorang tidak menghendaki, dan tidak merencanakan, dan tidak memiliki kecenderungan pada apa pun, maka tidak ada dasar bagi pemeliharaan kesadaran. Jika tidak ada dasar maka tidak ada penyokong bagi terbentuknya kesadaran. Jika kesadaran tidak terbentuk dan tidak berkembang, maka tidak ada produksi penjelmaan kembali di masa depan. Ketika tidak ada produksi penjelmaan kembali di masa depan, maka kelahiran, penuaan-dan-kematian, kesedihan, ratapan, kesakitan, ketidak-senangan, dan keputus-asaan di masa depan juga lenyap. Demikianlah lenyapnya keseluruhan kumpulan penderitaan ini.”

38. Intention

At Sāvatthī.

“Mendicants, what you intend or plan, and what you have underlying tendencies for become a support for the continuation of consciousness. When this support exists, consciousness becomes established. When consciousness is established and grows, there is rebirth into a new state of existence in the future. When there is rebirth into a new state of existence in the future, future rebirth, old age, and death come to be, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

If you don’t intend or plan, but still have underlying tendencies, this becomes a support for the continuation of consciousness. When this support exists, consciousness becomes established. When consciousness is established and grows, there is rebirth into a new state of existence in the future. When there is rebirth into a new state of existence in the future, future rebirth, old age, and death come to be, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.
